my mom has had shoulder pain for about the past two years or so. The doctor took x rays and they said nothing was wrong.

She is going on 45. She is saying her shoulder still hurts but she hasn't done any physical activity. He said it was arthrthis.

Then witout doubt your mother is simply stressed!!! I bet the pain is not continous and its on one shoulder mostly the left side.
There's something subconciously disturbing her and so she needs to identify it or just move out to a quieter place or holiday will do.

you will find that when she is engaged in other consuming activities she does not feel this pain.
Try this and it will work.

Arthritis is likely. but did her medical doctor do anything about it? and for someone to say, "I have pain" and then the answer be "Nothing is wrong" makes no sense.

Take her to a real doctor ... a chiropractor. We determine the cause of problems and fix them at their source. If we don't know the answer, we refer. If we can't help, we'll be honest. It's time we take a stand and do something about our health care. www.acatoday.com

PS: conditions of the shoulder are common in women. And they used to not happen until after the age of 55 or so. We're seeing an increase of conditions in the shoulder in women at an earlier age now. cheers.

PSS: also, drinking milk has nothing to do with it. where did that come from?

The previous answers contain good suggestions. I'd like to add just a couple of more. Does she have a large bust? If so, she needs to be sure she is wearing a supportive bra with wide straps to distribute the weight on her shoulders more evenly. Also, sometimes gallbladder problems can cause referred pain to the shoulder. I experienced this myself. Just something else to consider.

Michael is on the right track if it is arthritis; I take Aleve (brand name) for Naproxen Sodium and it helps it doesn't make it go completely away but it helps with the pain. I can't take the Motrin due to other meds. I have also been told that Motrin can cause stomach ulcers when taken for an extended period of time like you have to for arthritis. I would suggest the Generic equivalent to Aleve the Naproxen Sodium since it cost about half of what the brand name does.

I believe that the physician's assessment is correct...my mother has moderate arthritis that has developed in her knee and she is only 46....sometimes people are predisposed to developing the disease earlier in life. She may want to consider doing exercises to strengthen her shoulder muscles without putting too much strain on them...she should try swimming or stationary rowing 3-4 times a week to build up strength.

I would take some Motrin or Naproxen to relieve the pain. Then I would maybe try checking with another doctor to get a second opinion.
