My cousin is having her first baby, she is due in 2 days. She has smoked during all of her pregnancy. She washed the baby's clothing that she is taking to the hospital...then she leaves them in area that is being smoked around. Im afraid that when the baby is born the cigarett smoke will be very strong and harmfull. She has everything else for the baby in a smoke free home, but she has been staying at her mothers house, full of smokers!! and thats where her hospital bags are...for when it's time. Should I say something, is the "SMELL" of cigarett smoke harmfull to a newborn?
FYI: she doesn't plan on smoking around the baby!
Also, I went and bought some onsies, gowns, and socks for the baby...washed them in dreft.."I don't smoke"...and I plan to bring them to the hospital when she is in labor..and then I planed on offering to take the smelly baby things and wash them, then bring right back. IS THis a good plan...or should I say somthing now? OR is this just not a big deal?

I would let her know of your intentions because you do not want to seem over bearing when the time comes or come off as offensive. Just voice your concerns to her. Being as she doesn't want to smoke around the baby she might understand where you are coming from. However, it is very unfortunate that she has choses to smoke this whole time, sorry just had to say it. It makes me sad for the little one.

well if she has been smoking during the whole pregnancy the last thing i would worry about is the way the clothes smell. Let's hope the baby comes out okay. and if the mother is going to continue to smoke what's the difference? It's all second hand some which is harmful. She may smoke out doors but it's still on her. She should have stopped smoking when she found out she was preggy especially since she lives with smokers.

If your cousin has smoked all during her pregnancy, I think that tells you that she is not that concerned with the effects that cigarettes have on the baby's health. I am sure is she is of at least average intelligence that she already knows the risks. Babies that are born to mothers that smoke have a great risk of prematurity, being underweight, and possible learning disabilites, as well as broncial problems. My guess is that if she smoked all during the pregnancy, she will continue after the baby is born. Anything you do, will only be a stop gap measure.

I'm not sure that it is the smell of smoke that hurts the baby.
It's the chemicals and the smoke itself.
But, the smell isn't pleasant so I don't see a baby liking it.
If she has been smoking all through her pregnancy, it's worse then the baby being in clothes and around things that SMELL like it. The tobaco is going straight to the baby right now.

smoke being on someones clothes is bad for babies. I took my son to the hospital once and they asked if anyone in the home smokes. We told him that my boyfriend smokes but he does it outside. The Doctor said that can still be bad for the baby because the smoke is on the clothes and can cause asthma and make colds and sinus problems worse and cause coughing. There is a lot of problems it can cause or make worse. Unfortunately that still didn't motivate my bf to quite smoking. I suggest you tell your cousin to talk to the doctor about the effects.

Smoking leaves fine particles on clothing and skin which can be harmful to babies. Taking things you have washed to the hospital is a nice thing to do, but trust me, new moms have crazy hormones, and may be offended by the offer. You are very kind to be concerned about this, but if your cousin is a smoker herself, your impact will be minimal.

Not to be mean but comon be for real if she has been smoking all of her pregnancy why would she care now? I know she would start again as soon as she has it so it doesn't really matter about the clothes smelling like smoke. Hopefully you could talk some sense into her to start thinking for the baby and not herself.

This child is doomed to many health problems. Maybe your cousin will let you adopt the baby! If she loved it she wouldn't have smoked while it was inside of her. If she couldn't refrain while pregnant she most likely will not shelter her baby from the smoke. I am sorry I don't think highly of your cousin- I don't see how someone this selfish could make a decent mother. You are sweet to be concerned.

the "smoke smell" although its nasty is not harmful in normal concentrations. i think there is nothing more disgusting than a child dressed in cloths wreaking of smoke, but its not dangerous. If i were you i would be far more concerned with the fact the baby will be born with a nicotine addiction and raised by a mother who smokes even when pregnant and family who all smoke around a pregnant woman!! Unlucky child

agree with all others who talk of the harmful effects of smoke. the other huge problem is that smoking is related to SIDS (Suddent Infant Death Syndrome). Even if people smoke outside, the mother may be handling the baby with smokey hands etc and this can be passed on to the baby. bad news.
