I have some light soft leather cowboy boots which now have dark stains on after I lent them out. It looks like grease and I have tried wash liquid, orange kitchen stuff but though overall the boots come up well the stains are still there

Make a paste of dish detergent and baking soda. Put it over the stain and let it set for a couple hours. Scrub gently with a toothbrush and rinse. If it's grease, this should work.

Saddle soap might help, but it sounds like the oil in in the leather, which is why it is still stained. You might be able to use rubbing alcohol to help lift the oil out, but make sure and apply clean mink oil back in so the boots survive the cleaning.

Acetone. Put it on a rag, wipe it on, then, wipe it off. Get a good shoe polish (if this is finished leather and not rough), and rub it in good.
