You didn't mention if this was also present in childhood but assuming that it was present, I would think the father has some mental disorder ie depression or bipolar disorder or has a personality disorder (likely antisocial). Alcohol or drug use might also be present but even that is usually masking depression or bipolar d/o. Freud would probably say something else.

Because they were treated like that at that age...but if they were a real man, they would grow up and self-reflect and say " just because i was treated like doesn't mean i have to treat my children the same way"
