Some orthopedists recommend never to go barefoot but others recommend barefooting can strengthen your feet especially if you have some foot problem like flat feet, or if you dislike barefooting for any reason, to use a flexible insole that stimulates your feet rather than only supports them. Apart from my own barefooting, which has made my feet a lot stronger, I also think this last makes much more sense; after all when any other body part is weak in some way, we suggest practice, training, etc to strengthen it.... sometimes in combination with support during the training process but certainly not support and nothing else.... except for feet; when you have weak arches or flat feet then some doctors grab an in-sole or supportive shoe, tell you to wear it for the rest of your life and never bother with training or strenghtening exercises. Hmmmmm..........

Take a look at the articles in the source, especially the 'Flexible flat feet in children' article, but several of the other articles are similar in that they debunk the constant need of support for feet and ankles.

Both take a little time to get used to. I assume you have a back issue or flat feet and in either case, you should always where a shoe with a little heel not a flat. I have a back problem, so I like some birkenstocks but their styles are not the greatest. I also get away with really soft and thick flip flops- you know, the spongy beach shoe-- mine have a wedge and are really soft and good to wear after hours---just remember to never wear the same pair of shoes every day- that is what causes foot and back problems.......

Birkenstocks will actually hurt your feet as your instep is flat, the crocs feel really good, I use them when I am on my feet for 9 plus hours braiding hair (my feet are flat also).

crocs, for sure! i have severe plantar faceitis (sp?) and a major foot injury. i've been wearing crocs (authentic ones) for about 2 months now, and my foot is having no pain at all. i don't even wear my orthotics anymore. they mold into your foot shape, and cushion so much better than birkentstocks. and they're way cheaper that birks!!

Please NEVER wear crocs - they are so hideous, you may get arrested by the fashion police, there are some things where looks are more important that feel - and crocs are them!. In summer go for Birkies, and in winter go for Doc Martens- great support.
