Do you have to have lots of PC gear and money? Or only good code skill? A IT source told me that if you can write you can do anything you want. Is this true?

Besides being able to code, you need stealthy access skills and the ability to exploit...all this while maintaining good ethics and morals.

Now - hacking seems like a bad word as it has been made famous in the movies and news. In reality, without hackers, a LOT of bad code would still be out there. I'm not taking sides, just stating facts.

If by hacker you mean someone that gains unathorized access to protected systems for personal or destructive purposes......

Then good code writing ability is very helpfull, however it isn't the only necessary skill. If you are going to attempt to circumvent security systems you will need to know how they work. Both the physical security and or the electronic security. Good phone and interpersonal skills are also handy for "social engineering" which is getting people to give you information they aren't supposed to. This could include IP addresses, passwords, system designs, etc, etc. A computer is kind of important to be a hacker but not necessarily alot of equipment. Good engineering skills also help in that some of the equipment you might use would have to be of the home made variety, this is especially true if you get into phone phreaking and have to start building your own boxes. You will need time to read as much about computer security as you can, and you will need to be well versed in computers to understand what it is you are reading. You will need to be conversant in all of the major operating systems including Unix, Linux, Windows 2000, XP, Vista, and Mac OS. If you are doing all this over the internet you will need to understand how the internet works. The diffrences between HTTP, FTP, HTTPS proticols, etc. Also caffiene is important.

Well, hackers are very VERY smart people. You have to be creative because you want to invent coding as you go right? Also, sometimes its not a question of how much coding you know or experience, people like Shawn Fanning, the creator of Napster and dubbed the worlds most famous hacker, not only started off VERY young, but he also was capable of writing scripts that even computer science graduates can't! But if you are gifted man, and you know your stuff then just maybe. If your interested in Shawn Fanning's work and autobiography, read the book "The Rise and Fall of Napster."

You also have to be pretty smart and enterprising, with good problem solving skills. If you can get your name well-known as a hacker, top firms will hire you as an internal hacker and you can bypass the whole college education thing. You can also do some hard time in federal "pound me in the aS$" prision. So think long and hard about your anal virginity and whether hacking is something you want to get involved in

Code writing ability is something you'll see in the high-end hackers, but considering that you can buy pre-made hacking tools (or just download freeware versions), it's not quite as critical as it once was.

There's also a certain amount of mindset and social ability required as well. A lot of the more famous hackers, like, say, Mitnick, were more renowned for their social engineering skills.

ROFLMAO!!!!!!!!!

Here, im going to do you a big favor, because i was once in your seat.

FIRST! Pick up "Hacking for Dummies" $25 at Borders book store. Check it out. if you READ IT AND UNDERSTAND IT,
check out a famous person by the name of "Ankit Fadia"
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ankit_Fadia

Secondly, Pick up any other books by any other Computer Security authors.... Because obviously people cannot wright books on how to hack a gibson or they would be thrown in jail.

inorder to know how to hack, your going to have to learn the In and Out of Computers, that goes for the Language they
run-on to how they communicate.

im not a "hacker" but i do know a decent amount of computer knowledge.

In addition to those other two answers (even though I disagree with the first one) you definetly need experience. Before trying to hack Microsoft, you should definetly practice on other comps, like yours, etc. (and it is all illegal). I'd suggest getting a degree in cyber security too...
