I've been looking to buy an acoustic guitar for a while and I need some expert opinions.
1) Should I get an electric/acoustic or plain acoustic?
2) What brand and style should I go for? (I play mostly alternative single vocal stuff)
3) Is there a performance difference concerning the sound with cutaways or normal body designs?
4) My price range is $300 and below, can you make an suggestion for me?
Thanks guys!

I would go for an acoustic/electric guitar.
I have an acoustic/electric 12 string. I love the pure sound of the acoustic and if i need to amplify it I have that choice.
There is a performance difference in one that is cutaway and one that isn't in that if you want to play notes or chords up at the top of the neck you can get your hand further up there on a single cutaway.
Sound wise you may not notice a big difference at the low end of the price range of them.
Mine is the single cutaway.
Check on eBay, americanmusical.com or musiciansfriend.com for some of their low end price guitars.
You might find some Fenders in there, Gibson, Epiphone, Washburn, Applause and a few others , all are good guitars.
Good luck.

The 2nd & the 3rd answers are OK, for the most part. A cutaway makes the guitar a tad quieter and maybe reduces the bass a tad, but it's nothing that a less-than-top-professional would notice. In electric.acoustic, the preamps and EQ compensate for any loss, and the main purpose behind this electrificatioon is to eliminate the nightmare of miking a plain acoustic. So, if you plan to play live, electric/acoustic is the way to stay sane & save $100s you'd spend on a good mic. Your budget is plain bad, but you could get an Ibanez EW20 maybe with zebra wood for a little more than that. Go to Ibanez.com and check the exotic woods (EW) series, then find those guitars with musiciansfriend.com or other online stroes because you can't get that low a price with regular stores. Alternatively, some Yamahas may be that cheap and still be of a decent quality.

1) If you are planning on EVER playing this guitar in public, then get the electric/acoustc. Youll be glad you did.
2)Brands.. well fender is good, so is ovation, try em out and see which feels better
3)I personally think normal body sounds fuller, might jsut be me though
4) Now there you got me. Try music stores and asked to see the used gear. Good luck!

you should determine what type of music you are interested in playing first. if it is rock, then go electric. go to a small mom and pop shop and they will be glad to point you in the right direction. it is a matter of personal preference.
