The last two posters are correct -- depending on where you live, there are more and more self-service stations. I've also noticed that in the past ten years, service at full-service gas stations has decreased -- before it was common for a small army of attendants to run out and clean your windows, empty your trash, check your tire pressure, etc, similar to the 1950s in the United States. Now, I'm lucky if they ask to dump out my ash tray (which is pointless, since I dont smoke). In general, attendants are much more polite in Japan than in other countries, though I have run into quite a few rude ones out there -- usually high school dropouts who couldnt get a better job. You'll know the types when you see them...

DT4 is sort of living in the past. Most of the Gas stations where I am are Self-service. Unlike the US, the self-serve places are set up to take cash here, both paper and coin. Also Credit card. If you sign up as a SS member, you can get a further discount on your gas. I love the SSS here in Japan because you don't have to deal with a rude clerks and attendants. But they are nice anyway.

Hope that helps!

What the guy above says is not wholly true anymore. There are self service stands now. Where is basically the same system as anywhere else.
