I always get my friends something meaningful to them. As I don't know your friend, it would be hard for me to pull something out of the air. Tickets to a performance of a favorite band? Something (a book or album) autographed by someone she admires? A gift certificate to a spa for pampering?

A gift of a sum of money, may be sensible, because she will buy she really needs.
A birthday card, with nice writing, beautiful decoration.
Something functional and lasting, like a nice hand-bag.
Her favourite CD [ favourite musical group or artist] .
A book will make a good gift, providing that it is interesting , a rare find or edition.

Go with something sensible. No wine, no movie tickets, etc. 'course in a few months things not be as awkward. For now I would go with a CD, DVD or ( hate to say it but) a gift card ..but if you do go with a gift card do something like a spa, The Body Shop, or Pottery Barn ( I don't know any girl who doesn't like to decorate a bit) somewhere NICE not simple. Good luck.

Get her a gift voucher for her favourite store. I find them still a meaningful gift because you had gone to the trouble of getting it from her favourite store but it's still impersonal enough not to be taken the wrong way.

Gift card to a day spa
Gift card to her favorite store or restaurant
Something she can use in or on her car. CD carrier, some other organizer, something for safety, unique floor mats...
Something for her desk at work, something for her computer,
favorite old movie? - DVD
favorite musical group - best of CD

How about a book or a CD that she'll really love? I wouldn't worry about it too much. Don't put any more or less thought into it than you have on previous birthdays.

Get her a gift certificate for a massage. That would make any woman happy regardless the nature of your relationship.

How about a gift certificate at a music store? Let her pick out what she likes. Don't spend more than $20.

Try giving her something you know she'll appreciate that isn't romantic. You can also try giving her a card that clarifys your understanding of your relationship. Just dont give her anything romantic or something a boyfriend would give.

My suggestions:
Gift card to Nordstroms. Gift cards are great...it's like a credit card you don't have to pay back!
A gift basket of lotions & stuff like that.
A pedicure. No, don't give her one yourself...take her to a spa.
