Does the key turn freely (with no restriction)?
Does it have tilt steering? if so it sounds like the ratchet mechanism running down to the actual switch (under dash on column) is broken (common problem)
The switch (under the dash on side or top of the column) may be loose or broken.
you can unplug the wires on the switch but they are somewhat hard to get to and usualy tight

The trucks ignition switch is probably worn out. The switch operates on a rod that runs down the side of the steering column and as you turn the key on and off this rod moves the switch through its various postions. Over time the switch has worn and its now sticking in the on postion.

i own a repair shop, and you probably either have a bad ignition switch on it or the timing is way off,but if it sets and runs normal like the key is still on ,then its the ignition switch that has gone bad on it,one good way to tell if you remove the battery cable and it does die, then you know for sure its the ignition switch, other wise it may just be the timing set to high on it,and its doing what is known as run -on,or spark knocking, there's different names for it,but they all pretty much mean the same thing, good luck i hope this helps.

You need a new ignition switch or just rig you up a toggle switch to turn it on and off

Your timing is off...until you correct it, shut off the motor while still in drive.
