I am importing some goods from China into the UK and wanted to know if I can clear them in customs myself and pick them up.
I have seen ads for custom clearance agents but dont want to pay the fee. I think I have all the docs in hand so wanted to know how easy it is.

do know that if you are going to import from out of the eu your items will be subjected to customs duties and vat as well if they are valued above £18 or over a certain weight. filling in a customs form falsely is illegal so if you are using a company (compared to a family or friend) it will very likely be marked as merchandise and not gift (to make it exempt). and as far is i know customs rates can vary.
don't know if you collect or if its shipped to you or what as most of my overseas purchases were under the £18 value and were small enough to be delivered by royal mail

Its not easy, as you need to be in touch with the airlne and handling agents. You can contact Customs at the airport and arrange to clear them yourself manually. They won't be keen as its more complicated than you might think. You need to esnure you include the Airwaybill/Bill of lading for the freight charges, have any origin certificates and no the Procedure Codes and Commodity Codes. These are available at the Customs Office, but you might find it more hassle than its worth.
For a simple entry, an agent should charge you no more than £25. If its through a courier - DHL/TNT, they may include it in the proce
