If the Text message looks something like ^@ it's because your phone doesn't recognize the "silent text message" being sent to it to activate your Voice Mail Indicator.

This is common in unlocked phones from overseas, but can happen in phones in the states.

You can check out www.howardforums.com and do a search for your phones model number and voice mail indicator. It's easily fixed with a SEEM upgrade.

Note: NO Carrier in the United States sends text messages for Voice Mails anymore. All use the Voice Mail Indicator on your phone. Up until about 3 years ago T-Mobile sent an actual message to the phone saying there was voicemail waiting, but you weren't charged for that.

Most companies voicemail works like this: when you are left a voicemail, a "text" message is sent to your phone, and your phone recognizes it as a voicemail notification, which prompts your phone to display the envelope or tape real icon on your screen. Then, once the message has been listened to or erased, the voicemail system sends another "text" message, and your phone recognizes it as a message to remove that notification icon. However, if you are using a phone that wasn't made for the company you are currently using (i.e. a T-Mobile branded phone with Cingular, an unlocked phone purchased from the manufacturer) the message that is being sent to your phone doesn't match the type of message that the phone is expecting, and programmed to receive. There is no resolution, if this is the cause of your problem.

It is to let you know or to remind you you have a voicemail, because sometimes when you have no service or your phone is turned down or off, you may not know you have recieved a call and have a voice mail message.
You can call Cingular or I think you can take it off of the notification in your message setup. But you shouldn't have to pay for that. I'm not charged and i've never heard of anyone being charged for them. You should definately call Cingular about the charges.
