You will find some operations are unaffected (usually startup) but others run much faster (photo editing, video playback, some memory intensive games).
When physical memory is fully used, Windows begins using your hard-disk as "extra" memory (referred to as VIRTUAL memory). It takes hundreds of times longer for the computer to access virtual memory, so when you're machine is memory starved, it will run slow, and the drive light will be constantly on. (This is generally referred to as "thrashing.")
You will see the biggest "speed" increase in applications that take a lot of memory, or when you load many applications (browsers, e-mail program, spreadsheet, wordprocessor) and then swap between them.

Adding memory won't necessarily make your machine faster. When you don't have enough memory, your computer starts 'choking'. The computer kind of freezes momentarily for information to catch up. It happens when you are editing large photos in photoshop or editing video. All 256 is used, so the computer uses other resources to get a job done. By adding another 256, it'll take more effort to use up all your RAM. But if your computer never got to the point of using 100% of it's RAM, you won't notice much difference at all. Only when you are putting a lot of stress on the computer will you notice the extra memory boost.

Nope, there is nothing else you need to do. As long as both sticks run at the same speed, everything is fine.
When you boot up, watch the post screen and see if your additional memory is being detected, you should see it reading 512 Ram if not, then there is a problem.
As for seeing an increase, just doubling your Ram to 512 won't help or be all that noticeable to you. The machine notices it though and your programs will run smoother.

it depends on what u use your computer for, if your just a basic user that downloads music and other stuff you wont see much of an increase but it definitely helps, also check to your motherboard manual to see if it supports the extra memory, jus make sure you have the correct memory such as dimm or sdram etc

Lol srry but its time to upgrade to 1 gig already. You may not notice it but there is a small difference, it will run programs a little faster. You really need to get one gig this day and age though.
