Put weights on them. The more weight that can be held, then the stronger the t.p. and the stronger the sewing thread. The idea someone else had of using pennies would work well for the t.p., but for the thread...put two holes in the top rim of a large plastic cup and put the thread throught he holes. Carefully set the pennies into the cup, counting how many it takes to break the thread. You'll want to be extra careful because you want to base it on the weight of the pennies, not the extra downward force that results from merely dropping the penny in the cup from above. Each coin must be set in gently.

The finger test is probably one of sciences greatest way of testing toilet paper for strength. If upon wiping the pressure of your finger against the paper as it passes over your orifice does not poke a hole in the paper you can know that it has passed the test.
A good way to test the strength of sewing thread is to wrap some around the same finger you used for the toilet roll test then jerk your finger in an outward motion with the same amount of pressure you exerted during the roll test and a similar action like you took when your finger got wet this quick jerky pull will test the cotton and give you a result.

with toilet paper use a single sheet wet it, stretch it out and put weight on it to see which holds the most and with thread stretch it tight then hang weight from the center and see how much weight it holds usually thread will hold alot so get heavy weights

For t.p. you can stretch it out and keep putting pennies on it. Whichever brand holds the most pennies is the strongest.

if it doesn't tear and you don't get your fingers wet when you wipe then it's good toilet paper.
