A family member has fractured a foot during an accident and I'm looking up Aflac aide. It lists one benefit for Open Reduction and a lesser benefit for Closed Reduction. I would like to know what these mean.

Open reduction of a fracture involves making an incision in the skin and putting the fractured bones together and stabilizing with screws or plates or rods. Closed reduction means just that: no incision made, the fracture is manipulated under a type of Xray machine called fluoroscopy or just by feel and a cast is then usually applied. Open usually leads to quicker healing because the fragments are held together. Closed has the advantage of avoiding an operation but the healing can be slower because the bones are not rigidly held together.

Open reduction is when surgery is required to set a fracture. Closed reduction is when they set it by manipulating the bones to realign the fractured ends. If the fracture caused the bones to stick out through the skin, an open reduction is preformed as a matter of course. If the closed reduction doesn't work, or there are too many pieces, then a surgery will be done, also an open reduction. Open reduction means surgery, closed means it wasn't needed.

Closed reduction – The bone is set without making an incision in the skin. Open reduction – This involves cutting through the skin to realign the bones
