What are the properties of a gas?

A gas has molecules that are far apart and in constant motion. A gas occupies fully any vessel it is in. Therefore, the definition of a gas is that it has no definite shape and no definite volume.

Gases are the third stage of the matter, the first stage being solid, second liquid and the third gas. Plasma is the fourth stage.

Gas contains molecules at higher energy state compared to liquid and thus the bonding forces are much weaker compared to a liquid. Hence gas has no definite shape or volume but occupies all available space.

Gases may be monoatomic or diatomic or triatomic (like Ozone - O3). Gases may be colorless and odorless or may have color and smell.

Gases obey Boyle's law and Charles's law (that is why they are called Gas Laws), but not 100% correctly. Gases which are in contact with their liquid are called as vapors. Vapors don't obey Gas Laws.

Gases can be compressed adiabatically unlike a liquid. When they are compressed, that is work done on them, they get heated up. Similarly when adiabatic expansion takes place, the gas gets cooled because it does work. This property is used to liquify gases and in refrigerators, air conditioners etc.

A gas is one of the four major states of matter (after solid and liquid, and followed by plasma), that subsequently appear as a solid material is subjected to increasingly higher temperatures. Thus, as energy in the form of heat is added, a solid (e.g., ice) will first melt to become a liquid (e.g., water), which will then boil or evaporate to become a gas (e.g., water vapor). In some circumstances, a solid (e.g., "dry ice") can directly turn into a gas: this is called sublimation. If the gas is further heated, its atoms or molecules can become (wholly or partially) ionized, turning the gas into a plasma.

Great answer by "The one who knows". Just want to add a little bit to that answer. There are actually 5 states of matter. The one that you did not mention is called Bose/Einstein Condensation (or BEC for short), and was first predicted in 1924 by the two men who share it's name. BEC was first created in a laboratory in 1995. This lesser known state of matter is only achievable a few trillionths of a degree above absolute zero, so it is not seen on a daily basis by the average public. The process for cooling a substance down to this temperature is very complicated and requires utilizing various frequency laser and lights doppler effect along with a magnetic bottle type containment.
