Believe it or not, I have read that (I will get raked over the coals for this) Ronald Regain was not a very religious man. I loved Regain and what his religious affiliations where does not change the fact he is the main reason for the end of the cold war. Now that I got that clear, I have read more than once that he was not big into religion even though many faiths supported him and his politics.

You mean a President who never told us that he didn't believe in a higher power at all? An atheist not only isn't Christian, but has no belief in God, or a higher power, what so ever.
I don't believe any US President has been an atheist. But I'm not the worlds greatest Presidential historian either. Such a fact would probably have been treated more as a curiosity and/or trivia than an important factor in historical elections prior to the 20th century, since most Americans knew very little about the men they voted for at all anyway, by today's standards.

James Madison was probably the most out-and-out atheist president we've had. Taft wasn't that keen on religion, and neither were Adams and Jefferson.

in all probability, it could be political suicide to assert you didn`t have self assurance in God for some reason. however the percentages say that a minimum of one or 2 purely paid lip provider to the full churchy element. in all probability been a gay president as properly for an identical reason.

I dont think any presidential candidate is stupid enough to say their atheist. Sadly religion is a huge importance in campaigning and votes.
