Soldiers with shields why did they hit the shield with the sword repeatadly

To increase the noise they were making going into battle. (more noise = sounds like more soldiers) The Roman Legions were the first Ive heard of using this tactic but Im probably wrong.

For the same reason they like to hit each other's swords (rather than just stab or slash each other): cool, action-y, clanging sounds!

Its called fencing really & film crews trying to make it look so dramatic when really its not
