Its a conference that is very deep in tradition. Its the oldest Division 1 conference in America. When Penn State joined in 1990 they didn't change the name. Look at the official logo though. On either side of the T in Ten there is a 1. This is sort of hidden in the logo which indicates there are 11 teams.

The blogbaba is among other things a Michigan alum, and at Michigan, the answer to why our conference is called the Big 10 is well know among grads and students alike.

It is because size matters, and our schools, with the exception of Ohio State are Big 10 schools. Buckeyes are smaller and more diminutive that the other 10 schools, and really shouldn't even be in the conference. Ohio State really should be in it's own conference by itself called the little 1, but they probably couldn't even measure up to 1.

Agreed with almost all above. The Big 10 has more tradition than any other conference and we always produce great teams. Look at the home records of the Big Ten players and you will see why the powerhouse in the NCAA hasn't changed their name for one more little school...
