Can you name the title of a dragon book I read around five years ago.?

Question

Well i read it when i was in 5th-6th grade not sure which though. I believe it starts with a kid in a foster care which takes care of dragons. he later finds out that his father was the best dragon trainer around and he died trying to train the worst dragon ever. he then steal a dragon egg and escapes into the desert. I remember that on his way he used a palm leave or something to cover his footsteps. and he burns his hands on a special herb that he was going to give the dragon so that it could eat. and then he becomes one of the best dragon trainers and they fight dragons for money.. sort of like betting who will win and which one will die..

please help me out i want to read it again.. there is a sequel to it if you could tell me the name of the book i wanted or the sequel i could just look for the author and find the name of the 1st book i thought it was called "dragon heart" guess thats not it since i've had no good results. please try to help me as best you can thanks in advance

I know this book. It's an older release.... Blood-something is the name of the dragon.. Just a sec while I look it up.

I think you're thinking of the The Pit Dragon Trilogy by Jane Yolen. The books are Dragon's Blood, Heart's Blood, and A Sending of Dragons.

The books are set in the far future, on a desert planet called Austar IV. The planet was originally a place where criminals and convicts could go instead of their conventional punishment. The amazing feature of the planet is that it does hold life, but very little, and the prime species on the planet are its dragons. They were savage, and very dangerous when they were first found. While Eragon is about dragons and those that train them, they're called Dragon Riders, aren't servants, and don't fight the dragons for money. So I doubt it's the one you're looking for.

No problem =) I love dragons in all shapes and forms, have been collecting statuary for about 15 years now and read every book about dragons I can get my hands on. I read the Pit Trilogy over ten years ago, that's why I couldn't remember the exact name at first. Glad to have been of help!
