if i can can you tell me how to get to the proper functions in the calculator to solve stats problems.

You can, but it would be better not to, and here's why.
If you use a high end calculator such as a TI-89 for a stats class, you would be so busy learning to do it on your calculator that you would have little time or energy for really understanding how stats works. And your skills would not transfer easily to doing stats any other way, such as with a different type of calculator, with tables, or with a computer program.
Instead, use a basic scientific calculator such as a TI-36 for your calculations. This would give you enough hands on experience to see how stats actually works, and understand it at that level. Then your skills can easily translate to doing stats using whatever other tools you have on hand.

you should be able to use it. and if you can it should have a STAT button on it somewhere that you can push and it will show different formulas. I have a TI-83 and TI-84 and they both have it.

as for how to use it, make sure you download the guidebook (same link, above), that will show how to do particular computations.
