If a napkin isn't what you wipe your face with at the dinner table then what do you call it in the UK? One of my Profs was caught in the rain in London & asked for a napkin. The hostess was offeneded & he was confused.

Some times a napkin may be called a serviette. She may have thought he was asking for a feminine product (sanitary napkin).

A napkin in the UK is referring to a hankerchief or a small towel
