Emo is a somewhat ambiguous, controversial slang term most frequently used to describe a fashion or subculture which is usually defined to have roots in punk fashion and subculture, as well as some attributes of gothic fashion and subculture.It is loosely defined, and its meaning varies by region, but most definitions share a number of similarities.
I think people do emo because they feel they cannot express themselves in any other way, so being an emo separates them from the rest.

People use the word "emo" far too liberally. And many people know very little about it. Thw word "emo" stands for Emotional hardcore, which simply refers to a genre of music. The pioneers of this genre were the Sunny Day Real Estate, Saves the Day, Fugazi and many others. Music that is emo usually has lyrics about depression, feelings of isolation, and relationships. Nowadays peoplecall many bands emo when they actually don't sound like original emo at all (for example, Panic! at the Disco is NOT emo). The word changed alot over time, and people who wear tight pants and have a certain hairstyle are called "emo". But it originally had nothing to do with clothing or looks.

Emo is short for emotional
all different emotions at once. sometimes sad,others pissed, and even confused for the most part. there is a stereotype that emos r the self mutilator's but that technically isn't true in most cases (just keep that in mind)
its not something you do because its just a name for a clique. same way you have the jocks,skater dudes, goths...and so on...However emos have their own type of music "category" to go along with their feelings- music may include: screamo, alternative and anything else you can possibly imagine.
(emos are hot!)

My friends and I were Emo before everyone else started, It is really starting to tick me off! I was unique then every one else got exposed to it by bands adn stuff and started being Emo. I am not depressed and I dont cut my self, I just like the style of clothing and being unique well I was unique.

That is so funny because i was just looking into the same question a couple of hours ago. Emo...'emotional'...punk music..certain fashion...some of these people hurt themselves and write poetry about it. I looked it up on Wikipedia and also this site gave good info: http://www.fourfa.com/

You can't really be "emo" it's just a type of music. But bored little rich kids call themselves "emo" and act "depressed" and what not for attention.

They'rejust wannabe goths. People might call me Emo because I listen to rock, and I am severely depressed, but I'm not emo. I DON"T CUT MYSELF!!!!

emo= an emotionaless person. i think..they like have mental break downs all the time and stuff..Its just outsiders looking for attention and are getting it....don't do it dude
