I can only recommend broadway tunes. Sorry. But here's my list:
Not While I'm Around (Sweeney Todd)
I'm Not That Girl (Wicked) - the song will showcase the lower registers of your voice
I'd Give My Life For You (Miss Saigon) - a very powerful ballad
Nothing ( A Chorus Line) - a fun and easy song to sing
Lullaby of Broadway (42nd Street)
You Must Love Me/ Don't Cry For Me Argentina (Evita)
Memory (Cats)
As If We Never Said Goodbye (Sunset Blvd)
With One Look (Sunset Blvd)
Someone Else's Story (Chess) - one of my favorite ballads
Someone Like You (Jekyll &Hyde)
Once Upon A Dream (Jekyll & Hyde)
I Dreamed A Dream (Les Miz)
Home (The Wiz)
In My Own Little Corner (Cinderella)
Tell Me On A Sunday (Song & Dance)
Take That Look Off Your Face (Song & Dance)
Some Things Are Meant To Be (Little Women)
Love Look Away (Flower Drum Song)
Let me know if you want a copy of any song. I'll e-mail an mp3 for you.

Jekyll and Hyde the musical have two amazing ballads for altos "Someone Like You" and "A New Life" here's the web site if your interested in learning more (there both sung by the charterer Lucy don't look at any songs that are written for Emma that's the soprano part!) http://www.jekyll-hyde.com or there's also "I Don't Know How To Love Him" from Jesus Christ Superstar that one is really expressive. If you need the sheet music for any of these songs please e-mail me, I'd be happy to Scan the music and e-mail the copies to you.

Here are a few suggestions, all heartfelt ballads that don't require tremendous vocal technique:
Anyone Can Whistle from the show of the same name.
I'm Still Here from Follies.
Losing My Mind from Follies
Ladies Who Lunch from Company
So What from Cabaret
Tell Me on a Sunday from Song and Dance
Enjoy your workshop!

The Impossible Dream
"Impossible Dream"
To dream the impossible dream
To fight the unbeatable foe
To bear with unbearable sorrow
And to run where
the brave dare not go
To right the unrightable wrong
And to love pure and chaste from afar
To try when your arms are too weary
To reach the unreachable star
This is my quest
To follow that star
No matter how hopeless
No matter how far
To fight for the right
Without question or pause
To be willing to march,
march into hell
For that heavenly cause
And I know
If I'll only be true
To this glorious quest
That my heart
Will lie peaceful and calm
When I'm laid to my rest
And the world will be
better for this
That one man, scorned
and covered with scars,
Still strove with his last
ounce of courage
To reach the unreachable,
the unreachable,
The unreachable star
And I'll always dream
The impossible dream
Yes, and I'll reach
The unreachable star

900 Miles from My home
It was a wonderful alto piece and
Out of the Ivory Palaces as well. A great piece where the alto is the lead...but has several flats...but it makes it all the more yearning and beautiful

I recommend something that they won't have heard over and over and over again:
"Stranger to the Rain" (Children of Eden)
"Someone Else's Story" (Chess)
"Home" (Beauty and the Beast)
"Shadowland" (The Lion King)
