The system will shut down abruptly if it is overheating. Most likely this is your issue as many other problems would first cause a stop error (unless you have disabled them). If your CPU is constantly running at 100%, most likely this is due to some type of malware. You should run numerous scans using anti-virus, and other malware removal tools.
Also, try starting the system in safe mode to determine if the problem is with a hardware device driver. If it is possible to determine the process that is causing the load, that would be helpful.

When the CPU is being overloaded it tends to run hotter, thus causing an over heat. Laptops generally do have horriable cooling systems. You have two options as I see it. You can either buy a new laptop with a better CPU. Or just buy one of these lap cooler pads that sit under the laptop. They have fans that draw heat away from the laptop. I would try the second solution as you should be able to buy one at any major electronics store for under $50.

all very good questions. first check on your windows task manager what application or process is causing your cpu to go to 100% you can check that on 'processes' tab. identify the cause of it. run a spyware and antivirus program to determine if any viruses are in your laptop.
I don't know if dust can make your cpu reach 100% usage. but either way check to see if your fan(s) on your laptop are working as they should be(their speed) or if they are running at all. give your laptop enough space to breathe, don't have anything under that will obstruct the air circulation.
hope this leads you in the right direccion

running the cpu at 100% for a long time can make it over heat, but over heating does not cause the cpu to run at 100%. make usre your fans are working and the the air way is free, clean out the dust.

I've had problems with rtvscan, a norton AV program on some of my PCs at work. It stayed constantly at 99%. Users couldn't do a darn thing. I never could figure out the problem, so I uninstalled it and tried another program for AV. Are you able to identify the problem program with cont-alt- del? The shutdown could be due to heat. Blast it with some canned air.

it depends on how much memory was installed on your computer, maybe it was due to many backround programs that have been installed on your computer, uninstall the ones that you do not need and then download registry mechanic at www.download.com/ run a full registry scan and defrag your hard drive using diskeeper 2007, also can be downloaded at download.com/ it will take a short time only, but always defrag your hard disk always and then all unimportant programs should be uninstalled ok....
