I'm seventeen years old and have all but signed the contract to join the National Guard. I have about three months to prepare for basic training over the summer and would appreciate some advice. I don't need any assistance with cardiovascular, as I can run a sub 5 mile and can easily run long distances (10+ miles no problem). So I'm good there. However, I do not have strength...at all. I'm actually below the minimum weight accepted for my height (6'3'') in the military. I really need to work on my upper and lower body strength and I need to pack in as much improvement as I can in the next three months. I would very much appreciate if you could give me diet guidelines and workout examples...I really don't want to show up as the pathetic 'kid' who has to drag his gun around because he can't pick it up. Thanks.

For specifics, I weigh 140 lbs. I'm 6'3'', white and a male. I can only bench 90lbs.

I wouldn't worry too much. You should be partying and relaxing until you have to go!!!!

But if you must prepare:
Just try out all the gyms for a few days and use as many machines as you can figure out. If you don't want the pressure of their sales team all the time, do lots of PUSHUPS. They will make you push about 10x a day and lord my arms got manly.

Also, It's not a crime to be weak when you enter bootcamp and you'll just feel all the more invinceable/improved/dedicated when you graduate. They called me "princess" in bootcamp because I refused to let my leg hair grow long, not because I didn't pull my weight in PT.

I noticed the super-athletic kids, or people who had military families got picked on a little more because the TI's/DI's were looking for their weaknesses really hard. Nobody should go to boot camp and expect it to be just a really engaging workout program. You'll get more brownie points for observing, listening and executing things right the first time. Good luck! We're proud of ya!
