next time they call, DO answer the phone, ask them to please stop harassing you and to quit calling you. Legally they have to stop calling you and they know this, but you like most people just avoid there calls and so they keep calling. If you ask them to stop calling you and they keep calling you seek legal advice, but do not threaten the bill collectors with legal advice as that wouldn't be beneficial for you. Again legally they have to stop calling you but they will turn the bills over to a collection agency who will then call you, repeat above. It will stop the phone calls but eventually you will end up it court. If you are below the poverty level like you say, is chapter 13 backruptcy an option, then you may be able to start over.

Ignoring the calls won't make them go away.
They make money based on how much they can collect. And that's all they care about. Period.
See the Federal Trade Commission's rules for debt collectors: http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/conline/pubs/credit/fdc.htm
Notice that you can send a letter requesting that they stop contacting you by phone. You can ask over the phone, but if you want it to be the start of proving a case of harassment, you should send it in writing and send it return receipt requested. Keep track of it. And be sure you quote the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act when you tell them to stop calling; tell them that you want their name and title so you can document who is still calling you. (And keep track. You actually can sue them for violating these rules.)
Overall, I'm not advocating that someone shouldn't pay their bills, but it's also become sheer insanity what happens with these debt collectors.

Bill collection is a profitable business. Often the bill collectors get paid anything above 50 percent of what is owed. So if you owed a store 100 dollars and the bill collectors could get you to pay 80, the store would get 50 and the bill collector would get 30.

Bill collectors get paid by collecting money. They don't care if you can't pay the bills, they just want to make money.
If they are calling you outside of the hours of 8am to 9pm, they may be in violation of the law. If they are making any threats to you to try to get you to pay, they may be in violation again. Document when they call and what they say, then check with legal aid in your area if you think you have a case.
Are you really paying for an answering service when you can't pay your existing bills?

what i learned working in collections for three miserable years is they probably dont have enough business, everyone that wants to pay has paid, now they just keep calling the same people over and over again..just keep telling them they have the wrong number. be careful, dont tell anyone where you work, you dont want to end up garnished

they are computer generated calls...the operator justs waits till someone answers on there headset. So, unless you pay they will continue to call. Don't kill the messenger..the contract never said that if you are unable to pay we will not call you...it said that if we give you this money we expect to get paid back...If we don't get paid back then we will haunt you until you pay...in not so many words..lol

I'm also on SSI & Social Security with credit card debt, & those people are trying to sue me. I'm not sure how true this is, but I heard that debt collectors aren't supposed to garnish your gov't checks.
