Although a home owner is allowed to do his own electrical work that usually applies to adding a plug, or light to an existing circuit. Today's homes have a separate circuit for each room in the house, and one for each major appliance, too. And don't forget about phone lines, and TV cables.

Generally, when an older house is going to be remodelled it is stripped to the stud walls. That makes it easy for the electricians and plumbers to make changes. If you cannot do this you will be fishing wire thru the attic, or the crawl space, and into walls.

You can search the web for articles and discussion board info, but it's best to look for a how-to book. Ultimately you have to have a panel to plug in those new circuits, and it's likely your old one won't do. My husband and I added a room onto our house, and we did all the electrical, but when it came to changing out our panel and hooking everything back up to the larger new panel we hired an electrician.

Rewiring is more difficult as you'll be fishing for lines within the walls. Initialy wiring is far easier as you have access to the whole house before walls go up.

The job isn't as bad if you have access to an attic to run your lines.

Otherwise, I'd hire it done. sorry.

If you live in an area that the building codes allow you to do this, you can get some self help books to get you started.

This isn't some thing that you should try from any advice that you get here.

Because that's such an important procedure I wouldn't attempt it without a certified electrician. Your insurance may not accept it if you don't do it right.
