It's hard to just pick one school because the answer would depend on what level and what area of study you have in mind. However, at the general level, I think most people will agree that Stanford, Caltech, and Berkeley are the best schools in California.

Stanford. I have tons of friends who will kill me for saying that, being Cal alumns, but Stanford's the best.

Berkeley's one of the best in country, but it's just under Stanford. The gap grows wider when you throw in other things like athletics, location, facilities, etc.

Cal Tech would be a contender, but the school's too specialized.

Sorry, but UCLA and USC are a good step under those three. While they're still among the very best in the country, these two (and Harvey Mudd) are just under the top three I mentioned above.

And yes, I know the UC San Diego people will be jumping up and down claiming they're just about as good as Cal and UCLA. But you're not. Get over it.

but it also depends on your major.

for example, if you're an english major, you would not "fit" in cal tech, but you will for berkley.
