Yes this used to happen to me alot, and has stopped ever since I stopped working. Sleep has several stages. When your in REM sleep (rapid eye movement), your muscles paralyze. When a person is extremely stressed out, they sometimes wake up during REM sleep-and of course, you're paralyzed and wont be able to move or talk until your fully awake. All I was able to do was open my eyes, I would try to scream for help-but my voice ended up coming ou minutes later. I was so scared-I thought I was being possessed or something weird like that! But then when my psych teacher explained this to me- it put me at ease.

yes, the sleep paralysis part has happened to me where I coudln't move at all, but I also couldn't speak.
there are a lot of theories on why it happens, but my favorite theory is that your spirit leaves your body when you are sleeping. When sleep paralysis occurs, your spirit (although still attached somehow) is still far away from your body when you "wake up". So therefore it is impossible to move.
Like i said, there are lots of different theories, this happens to be my favorite one. If you want to read more about "what happens when you sleep" check out this book called
The mystical, magical, marvelous world of dreams, by Wilda B. Tanner.
YOu don't have to buy the book, just go down to Barnes and Noble or Borders bookstore and fumble through the pages, Its an interesting but easy read. This particular theory happens to be very prevelant among many spiritual teachers, prophets, etc.. So who knows, there may be some truth to it.

I couldn't see the question. The site has been acting up.
YES. Several times. I really wanted to escape from the dream scenario because it was scaring me.
One time( I had actually been at a zoo that day and looked at a couple hundred snakes.), and I dreamed that they were crawling all over me. I don't care for snakes. I tried to scream a couple of times before I was able to do it.(This had not a blasted thing to do with Freud's idea about what snakes symbolize.)
Another dream was about a man trying to grab me while I walked on a dark street. I tried to scream that time, as well.
I have been talking out loud, crying and laughing and wake myself up with the noise. This happens rarely.
None of this bothers me. I like my dreams. They are very detailed and exciting.

I'm surprised no one has given you the obvious answer....If you are really going thru this; you need a sleep study done at a qualified sleep clinic. It's very possible this IS something; and they can help you...Please have your family dr make your appt.

I have, but I had never thought about it... I thought they were just terrible nightmares. It's happened to me three times in the past few years, so not very often, but it is terrifying!
