A country doesnt have to still be a british colony to be considered in a Commonwealth. Like in the Commonwealth games, most of the countries participating are no longer British colonies.

America was a British Colony, however, America became a sovereign nation and is no longer a British Colony. In order to be part of the British Commonwealth, America would have to be considered a British Colony, like Canada.
We have our own government, and the Queen is only a figurehead, as is her representative, the Governor General, but we are still considered a British Colony because we never broke away from British rule. Technically speaking, the Queen or the Governor General can vito any bill proposed in Canadian Parliament.
America completely rejected British rule and became it's own country with no ties to England or the Crown and England has absolutely no say in anything that America does.
Independence Day celebrates the day America became a sovereign nation.

There were 13 colonies of the British empire on the east coast of North America which banded together and declared their independence over 230 years ago. Furthermore these colonies won their independence. The US is therefore not part of the British Commonwealth.

Poor Chuck M, if you can achieve independence without bloodshed, why not?
Yes, America was an English colony. They have an Independence Day because they are exactly that - independent! It was probably a decision made by the English and the Americans not to have a Commonwealth relationship. However, since the First World War the two countries have been allies.

All the members of the Commonwealth were former territories who were granted independence by Great Britian.
The United States, on the other hand, kicked that British azz,
and won her freedom.

America WAS a common wealth, it hasn't been since the Revolutionary War. We aren't included in the Common Wealth because our forefathers declared themselves independent of England and won the war.
