For the money, and gas mileage you are looking for, and for comfort, safety, and stability....it doesn't get any better than the Suzuki line. They aren't very well heard of, but they have been the leading Japanese car maker for the last three years running. The XL7 is a comfortable ride which has the capacity to seat 7, and the Grand Vitara is a true framed SUV with capacity to seat 5. Both get over 20mpg in the city. Also, the Suzuki SX-4 is a best buy. At 15,000.00 and 35mpg, it is the best all around AWD in the market today. Comfortable seating capacity and the highest comfort and safety ratings it its class.

I'd actually recommend the Ford Freestyle. This car is actually based on the Volvo XC90 and rides and drives beautifully. Because it's based on Volvo technology (Ford owns Volvo), it's incredibly safe and surefooted, and because it's a crossover the car has amazing interior space and versatility without being too heavy. And of course, because it's a Ford, you can get a sweet deal on it. I would wait until the 2008 model year when it gets renamed the Taurus X because it gets a more powerful engine with similar fuel economy.
