Because they suffer from a disease called addiction, which knows no boundaries. A certain number of people will suffer from addiction to something in any society. I promise that you know someone now that is addicted, has been addicted or will be addicted. It could be you. Please understand that addiction is not curable and that person will always be addict but they can be sober/clean. There is a genetic link with addiction. Typically if either parent has ever had an addiction problem with ANYTHING (not just drugs it could be shopping, gambling, collecting, etc ) then that person is predisposed to addiction. The gene might exist then but whether they start the addiction is up to them.
