Sabers, Ducks, Sharks are all caring over the last season's successful playoff run. They are all really good.

In the West,

Earlier, it looked like the Ducks were going to run away with the conference. At this point, they still look good. Nashville is playing really good hockey. If they end up with the number one seed, they really won't get a break. They might play Dallas or Minnesota in the first round. The Wings are playing good hockey. Many people thought the Wings success was going to end with the Salary cap. So far so good. The Sharks are one of the best three teams in the conference. Like the last couple seasons, I expect the Sharks to make a strong push at season's end and it will carry into the playoffs.

Ducks
Sharks
Wings

I'm not convinced about Nashville being for real. They will have to show me. The West is so strong that their number 8 seed almost has the exact record as the East third seed.

In the East, the Sabers also carried last season's playoffs success. The Rangers have been the biggest disappointment. The Devils are playing good hockey. The biggest surprise in the conference is Pittsburgh. Pens will end with the 3rd,4tth, or 5th spot. The Devils will end up with one of the other spots. If both teams win their opening rounds in the playoffs, they will face each other in the second round.

Best in the East

Sabers
Devils
Pens

Lots of them, more so then any other year. None of the following would terribly surprise me if they won the cup:

Detroit Red Wings
Anaheim Ducks
Vancouver Canucks
New Jersey Devils
Buffalo Sabres
Calgary Flames
San Jose Sharks
Dallas Stars
Nashville Predators

Additionally, while I WOULD be surprised if the Pittsburgh Penguins, Ottawa Senators, Tampa Bay Lightning, New York Islanders or Minnesota Wild were in the Stanley Cup Finals, they definitely are "good".

This year? Well, the Buffalo management team had played their cards in respect to the new NHL. The penguins have also stepped up theie game and have gotten key players (i.e. recci, malkin, crosby, staal, laroque, roberts, etc etc). Detroit as always been good, even though their players are aging. I'd say NJ is also up there.
Ottawa has improved since last year also...they're playing great hocky this season.

Sabres and Pens are probably two of the top in the East. I know the Devils are leading the Atlantic, but I think that has more to do with Brodeur then anything so now calling it a TEAM effort. I don't keep up with the West.

Buffalo Sabres, Nashville Predators, Anaheim Ducks, Detroit Red Wings, New Jersey Devils (GO NJ!)

Those are the teams to watch in my opinion. The standings are usually a good indicator of which teams are good (I'm not being sarcastic).
