Not only do you need to replace the oil every 3000 miles, you also need to change the oil filter as well or might as well not even change the oil.
Changing the oil in most cars isn't that hard as long as you have the right tools, just jack it up, drain the oil, unscrew the filter, put the new filter on and add how many quarts your car needs.

Everyone's pretty much got it right so far.

The engine of a car is made of metal, and inside of that engine (you can't see this stuff just by opening the hood) is a bunch of moving parts that are all metal as well. They make up hundreds of pounds of metal and it all spins inside of the engine. When metal rubs against metal like that in all those moving parts though, it gets hot because of something called friction. Oil helps keep things cool by making a slippery surface in between all of those metals and it makes them easier to move and since they're easier to move, you won't have as much friction, and all that unnnecessary and extra heat.

However, the engine itself, even though all of that metal is now moving smoothly because of the oil, is still making heat when it works normally, and that heat can breakdown the oil and make it less slippery. Scientists agree that for the most part, after driving an engine for 3000 miles, that heat has broken down the oil enough that it's losing it's slippery-ness, and needs to be changed. You can do it more than 3000 miles, but 3000 miles is a good number, and when you think about it, it's not a bad thing to change the oil often and keep that metal slippery.

You also have an oil filter which is there just in case a little piece of metal comes off of all of that metal that's spinning and touching other metal inside of your car. It's very important to have clean oil, so you should change your oil filter every 3000 miles too.

It's great that you want to know this stuff before you can even drive though. Keep reading up and learning as much as you can about cars. They can last a long time if you treat them right, like change your oil every 3000 miles.

the oil keeps the moving parts of your engine lubricated and moving. Its is VERY important. Without oil your engine will sieze and become totally useless. You should have the oil changed every 3000 miles. If you don't know haw to do it, there are dozens of places that can do it usually for under $30.00.

Every IC engine needs oil for its lubricating purpose. Once the oil loses its lubricating power of become less viscous then it needs to be changed with a new one. Its done by supplying oil to the crank case at the bottom of the engine.....NMN
