HEKATE (or Hecate) was the goddess of magic, witchcraft, the night, moon, ghosts and necromancy. She was the only child of the Titanes Perses and Asteria from whom she received her power over heaven, earth, and sea.Hekate was usually depicted in Greek vase painting as a woman holding twin torches. Sometimes she was dressed in a knee-length maiden's skirt and hunting boots, much like Artemis. In statuary Hekate was often depicted in triple form as a goddess of crossroads.

Hecate is the Greek goddess of the crossroads. She is most often depicted as having three heads; one of a dog, one of a snake and one of a horse. She is usually seen with two ghost hounds that were said to serve her. Hecate is most often mispercepted as the goddess of witchcraft or evil, but she did some very good things in her time. One such deed was when she rescued Persephone, (Demeter's daughter, the queen of the Underworld and the maiden of spring), from the Underworld. Hecate is said to haunt a three-way crossroad, each of her heads facing in a certain direction. She is said to appear when the ebony moon shines.

Hecate, in Greek mythology, goddess of darkness, and the daughter of the Titans Perses and Asteria. Unlike Artemis, who represented the moonlight and splendor of the night, Hecate represented its darkness and its terrors. On moonless nights she was believed to roam the earth with a pack of ghostly, howling dogs. She was the goddess of sorcery and witchcraft and was especially worshiped by magicians and witches, who sacrificed black lambs and black dogs to her. As goddess of the crossroads, Hecate and her pack of dogs were believed to haunt these remote spots, which seemed evil and ghostly places to travelers. In art Hecate is often represented with either three bodies or three heads and with serpents entwined about her neck.

She's generally considered to be three headed with the heads of a dog, horse and snake. The depiction of her with three bodies came later in art.

Originally she was single faced and single bodied, but the most common representation is now the 3-headed one.

from the pagan aspect....
she was a greek goddess, responsible for the mantles of magic, mystery, and midnight
you could easily refer to her as the dark goddess of mystery or possibly female magic? She is said to have been misunderstood as an evil mistress of the underworld and the dead, when more aptly she had a better understanding of how the universe works to better control it to her desires.

I would think of associations for her with black, silver, moon, stars, caldrons, mirrors, unexplanable things, maybe even the allure of death.....not death itsself. (like the romantism of a vampire, not the vampire itsself) I have heard of her appearing as a triple goddess with the maiden, mother and crone (err, old lady), but it is not a staple of her venerators.
