You see and hear horrible things on the news and in magazines about how abused women and children in these countries are. Does anyone have anything to add?

Current statistics underscore the significant improvement and the remarkable expansion of educational opportunities at all levels for Arab women in the last two decades. A new born girl in the Arab world today has much better chance than her mother to attend school and finish college. Arab governments are committed and determined to augment educational opportunities and to make them accessible to all eligible women. It is firmly believed that without emancipating women from the bondage of illiteracy no real political, social or economic development can take place.
Many Arab women already have distinguished themselves as poets, novelists, teachers, physicians, chemists, physicists, engineers, doctors, judges, lawyers, journalists, and Cabinet members.
Female genital mutilation is still practised in certain pockets of Africa and Egypt, but viewed as an inconceivable horror by the vast majority of Muslims.Plus its cultural not religious. Forced marriages may still take place in certain Indian, Pakistani and Bangladeshi communities, but would be anathema to Muslim women from other backgrounds. A woman forbidden from driving a car in Riyadh will cheerfully take the wheel when abroad, confident that her country's bizarre law has nothing to do with Islam. Afghan women educated before the Taliban rule know that banning girls from school is forbidden in Islam, which encourages all Muslims to seek knowledge from cradle to grave, from every source possible.

Yes, i agree der r places like afganistan, iraq etc where women are abused and their rights r snatched away 4m em but dat doesnt happen everywhere. my rites r not taken away 4m me nor kids n women r being abused here.

women have the right to own property, to choose their own partners, and have equal rights to education. In accordance with prevailing culture, these rights became transformed into the duties of women to take care of children and remain in the house. This is not all that different than a century ago in America where women were expected the duties of "Republican Motherhood," which did not take them beyond the household sphere.
It is not Muslim women as such, but women everywhere who have been imprisoned by prejudice and cruelty.

Some middle eastern countries go to far, I'll admit. But think also, that they have a different set of values than we do. They value virtue while over here we value freedom. Their women aren't all getting pregnant at young ages, or having sex all over the place, nor going out into public with pretty much no clothes on. That said, I think they could take a lesson from us and allow their women a little more freedom. But there are some strides being made. Saudi Arabia has granted women the right to go to college and they are steadily granting them more rights.
Yes, life is more restricted, but I think some of the young girls here could take a lesson in modesty from the Middle Eastern girls.
It all depends on who you are. I have cousins over there and they don't seem all that unhappy.

In Middle East, life is terrible with girls and women. From a child, girls are aware of being a property. They do not have any rights to enjoy their lives. They have to stay at homes with mothers and work all the time. They are not allowed to go out at night. They are force to wear veils and long dark dresses especially when going out . They do not have permission to take part in social activities except prayer performance. Few females are allowed to go to schools to learn a little. On top of that, men can do everything with their wives even kill them because of unreasonable causes

Yes all the comments about the treatment of women in Muslim countries are true and basically if the War on terror is lost by Western countries this is how our society will be.

Yes women are treated like crap in Muslim countries. If they get raped they need 4 male witnesses to testify for them in court. In some cases they get killed because they were raped to protect the family "honor" by being stoned to death, buried up to their neck and hit with stones in some cases. They need to be accompanied by a man. They wear burqas, and if they do not they are considered "fair game" for the men. The men in these countries have such limited control of their impulses that the women have to cover themselves head to toe to avoid being sexually victimized? However, it is true that women treat women like crap in these countries as well. A woman in BC Canada arranged for her daughter to be killed in India because she married the wrong man. Further, women also "turn in" non abiding women, or spread gossip/lies about another woman to have her killed through honor killings. Also, many people in Afghanistan are denouncing the West for killing their 'women and children." Yet, all Jihadists must obtain permission from their mothers first before they engage in Jihad. If these mothers said no, they cannot engage in Jihad. So long as women in these countries treat each other like crap, and allow themselves to be treated like crap, they will continue to be treated like crap.

women and young girls have to cover up their entire bodies except for their eyes, they must serve the men whatever they want, they cant speak to a man unless spoken to, and they cant complain if a man has another woman.

basically America in the 1950's.
