i think the major difference between then and now is feeling empowered

in my mothers generation lbgt people were stifled at best, they had no resouces and they were really not in a great position if they came out They were CLOSETED

in my own generation, with limited resources you were brave to come out, but at the same time i felt safe when i did, so i was HOPEFUL

the new generation is confident for the most part that there is an accepting place within this world for them once they decide to come out, although it might not be with thier primary family they arent cast off to some island, they are surrounded by resources and therefore EMPOWERED

Kids these days are much different in the way they think. I think it's a vicious cycle. Previous generations cared a little less about their children's attitudes and values, and their kids cared a little less, and their kids cared a little less, and so on. What we get is a generation that is blind to authority, feels invincible, and has normalized the things that are clearly wrong is society. Just the other day, I heard a little boy tell his mom to shut up. I, of course would have been dealt with promptly, but his mother simply said, "Now you know it's not nice to tell people to shut up!" I'm only 21, but I see people around me that are my age that have no respect for superiors, feel that everything they have is an entitlement or a right, and that seem to think that nothing could ever hurt them. We have a generation that needs to open it's eyes before it walks into a wall!

now, I certainly don't think this of all young people, because I actually do meet young people who are decent, smart, responsible and respectful.
I think some people's pro-occupation with being politically correct goes too far. There's a big difference with discipline and abuse. a big difference between spanking and beating. And a seemingly complete disregard for teaching young people any manners or respect of their elders. I think some parents have become so afraid of disciplining their kids for fear of being accused of abuse, that they just don't. Or some of them just flat out don't care. An awful lot of teenagers are rude, self-absorbed, stuck up, ignorant, hateful and disrespectful these days. It's really sickening. I hear of kids having fights in the shopping malls around here (and around the country) all the time. One big mall here, and a few to follow, have set curfews for people under a certain age. It seems a lot of parents just drop off kids at malls to get them out of their hair and they just run wild these days.

I think youth now has no respect for the rights or feelings of others...they are totally self absorbed...maybe the result of permissive parenting?

Yes, back in the day respect was a requirement not an option.
