Positive Reinforcement- what may at first seem like an immoral act is reinforced by money, by certain parts of society, by the people they work with who accept that lifestyle, etc.

Title: The making of a whore.

Author: Russell, Diana E. H.

Author Affiliation: Mills Coll, Oakland, CA, US.

Source: Bergen, Raquel Kennedy, (Ed) Issues in intimate violence. p. 65-77.

Publisher Info: Sage Publications, Inc, Thousand Oaks, CA, US. 1998. xiii, 314pp.

Abstract: The author powerfully tells the story of Lara, who is an incest survivor. Lara, using her own words, shares how an incestuous relationship with her grandfather shaped her sexuality and created her "prostitution persona." This chapter shows the personal devastation that incest can cause as Lara explains how her relationships with her husband, lovers, family members, and her own self have been shaped by her experiences as a victim of incest. My theory: Prostitutes (male & female) have no sense of self-worth. A direct result of how they were raised. Most prostitutes were sexually abused as children. Love & trust was destroyed & their mistreatment caused them to see themselves as sexual objects only. Many turn to drugs and/or alcohol to dull the pain & can only afford their habits by prostitution. I don't think they think they can do anything else. And so, they continue to be treated as objects of sexual desire by people without compassion in their own lives. I would include strippers, lap dancers, women who pose in men's magazines & any other woman who thinks of herself primarily as a sexual object. And, of course, there's an unending supply of people out there ready & willing to exploit them.
