"5-speed" mean 5 gears and stick shift. This is to differentiate from some cars with only 4 gears, or some these days that are coming out with 6 (still stick shift.) If the number of gears is listed, you can assume that it's stick, unless it states that it's an auto.

A "5-speed" or "auto" on a Honda Civic, or any other vehicle for that matter, refers to a MANUAL transmission (which requires the driver to shift gears manually), or an AUTOMATIC transmission (which shifts automatically, hence its name). Hope this helps.

5-speed would be referring to the car as having a stick shift, auto would be an automatic transmission.

Normally, when a vehicle is listed as "5 speed," it is a manual transmission vehicle. So, once you see them state the amount of gears or "speeds" that generally means it's a stick shift. Hope that helps.
