The reason I want to increase is to be able to play battlefield 2 which requires 1.7ghz to play it. And my cpu is only 1.6ghz right now.

The game I am looking at requires a 1.7 ghz cpu . As far as everything else I meet the requirment. The game is battlefield 2 and I was thinking if I upped the clock speed I would be able to meet the requirment. Any ideas

The main ingredients that you want to pay attention to in overclocking are heat, type of memory, and incremental steps. You can easily overclock to 1.7ghz without having to worry about heat. Raising the speed in that small of an increment shouldn't cause any more raise in temperature then you have now.

Why do you want to do that small of an increase? I doubt you'll see any difference.

If you are thinking of raising it higher, just make sure to keep an eye on the temps in the BIOS and also if you are new, check your chipset, if it's not Nvidia NF series chipset, don't go past the 200 FSB. I doubt you will get that high though as I don't believe you have watercooling.

BF2 is going to use a LOT of memory. If you don't have at least 2gb of memory your hard drive is going to be running constantly while running BF2 due to the swap file. I hope you also have a decent graphics card. Like I said before about the overclock. Your system should be fine if you overclock it to 1.7ghz. It is such a small increase that the most temp difference you might see is a 1 - 2 degree difference at idle. Load should be about the same, maybe a 1 - 2 degree difference in my opinion. Only way to really find out is to experiment. Your deffinantly not going to burn anything up by increasing it that small. So what are you waiting for? Get to overclocking!.. :)

as long has you have a proper cooling system. make sure you have fan on processor and one or two case fans that are running good.
the only way it will hurt your computer is if over heats. in the bois there is a place to check the tempurater. it should stay around 40 degrees or lower.
