No reason, really.
The planets condensed out of the solar nebula as the solar system was forming, at somewhat random distances from the sun.
The earth happened to appear in a temperate range around the sun, where it's warm enough for complex chemical reactions to occur and interact within a liquid environment. Futher in, it gets too hot, and complex molecules break apart before they even get a chance to form life, and farther out, there's not enough energy to build these molecules, or there's no liquid environment for them to interact. Life doesn't have a chance to start or thrive in either of those environments.
But nature doesn't say, "Hey there's no life on this planet, so I'll destroy it."
Besides, even lifeless planets serve a purpose. If it weren't for Jupiter constantly sweeping up the asteroidal junk in our solar system, earth's life probably wouldn't have survived the constant bombardment of large objects.

There is no why. The planets formed, this particular one had decent energy available at the surface for life to form. It's all an accident. Imagine if the asteroid hadn't hit 65 million years ago, we wouldn't even be here to wonder why.

Because earth is just an insignificant grain of sand in a dessert of planets. (Yes that's a metaphor.) I am pretty much certian that life exists on at least a couple billion other planets.

It's not a "why" kind of thing. They're just there. It's the kind of thing scientists call an "imponderable." There is no reason, or the reason cannot be known.

They don't need a purpose to exist. And they certainly don't have to be any use to us to exist.

For us to ask why, and explore them.
