Go and sing your heart out. Ignore whose listening and concentrate on enjoying your song! Forget the technical garbage; it'll just trip you up.

Here is a really neat breathing exercise that I learned last summer.

1) get a tissue
2)find an empty space on the wall and hold the tissue up to it
3) breath from your diaphragm and slowly release your hold of the tissue.
4) you should be holding the tissue up to the wall with your breath
5)experiment for a while... you could also try moving back a little every time.

This exercise is to help increase you strengthen your diaphram so that you may be able to sing and breathe better.

also pushing down lightly on your diaphragm while you are singing increases the volume of your voice. practice on that for a while and eventually try it without your hand there.

Lay down flat on the floor and watch your stomach as you breath in and out. The stomach should rise as you breathe in and fall as you breathe out. That is where your diaphragm is - learn to breathe like this and you will be able to get more air.

Remember when you are singing to pull your head down so that you have a short front of the neck and a long back of the neck. This will help the air escape from your throat as you are singing.

Sounds strange but go swimming. Try to swim under water for as long as you can w/o exhaling. Then when you do exhale do it slowly. This will teach you diaphragm to expand and you will "feel" the tension in the correct places. Remember that feeling when you are practicing your songs to make sure that you are breathing correctly and the forced air is coming from your diaphragm and not just your lungs.

Google "lip trills." I did them as a warm up in a college voice class, but obviously I'd have to SHOW you how to do them... and can't really explain it. Its like humming, while blowing enough air to flap your lips like blowing raspberries (or when someone on The Simpsons "burps"). It sounds simple, but it REALLY winds you, therefore gets you working on breathing.

ANOTHER is to lay on the ground and place a book on your diaphragm. Rule: don't let the book move. Fill up with air, then sing and don't let the book move. Keep "pushing" the air and keeping it tight.

These are great ways to build your muscles and improve the breathing. Happy Singing!
