NO, never was.
They were in heavy competition with Harley and about 200+ other motorcycle companies in the early 1900's.
The depression of the 1920's wiped out almost all but Harley and Indian.
In 1999 some investors bought the rights to the Indian name and they started building motorcycles with an S&S engine. From reports I have read and from personal testimony, I have to gather the new Indian is a very fine machine.
Sadly, a major investor backed out about 2003 and left the others hanging out to dry. The company had to file bankruptcy. There is talk of a new investor moving production to Kings Mountain, North Carolina and producing motorcycles again in 2007.
Even though I prefer my Harley, I have to say it would be heartwarming to see the Indian name get well established and survive this time.
I may have to plan a trip to North Carolina this summer just to see the factory!!

Harley Charlie; The major investors/owners of the Chris Craft marine marque have most definitely bought the rights, intellectual property and name of the Indian Motorcycle company. They have already purchased land in Kings Mountain and may have even broken ground by now.
This is exciting news for the industry and sport as these gentlemen are not just another custom company trying to go big time or some ne'er do wells with more money than sense. They brought Chris Craft back from a virtual watery grave and have the business savvy AND the financing to do the same with Indian.

No, not unless they aquired it recently. Indian motorcycles have taken several incarnations, most recently a company was formed to build them once again, but failed and was liquidated. The Indian was a fine motorcycle and I would hope will reform at some point. It would not be a bad idea for HD to buy the trademark and make a new HD "Indian Special", that would truly rock.

INDIAN is not a company any more,
during WWII Harley Davidson who made better bikes than the Indians got contracts with the army, and that killed the Indian's future, and they whent out

No. Indian went bankrupt a couple years ago.
