I am 37 weeks and not dilated or effaced. the doctor seems to think that i will go past term, this worries me because i am planning a natural childbirth and daddy was allmost 10 lbs. i am worried that the baby is going to get too big, is there anything i can do to make myself start dilating so that i don't go past 42 weeks? should i be worried that the doctor won't check the weight of the baby?

Just relax and go with it. You could go into your next appt and find out you are 3cm dilated. You never know. I've heard sex is helpful (I think for stress relief only, but who knows, lol). Walk, walk walk...

There is absolutely nothing you can do to affect dilation, effacement, or delivery date. It's totally out of your hands. This is good practice for when your child is born and you are suddenly a slave to the whims a very small and unreasonable person (ha ha).
I respect your desire to have natural childbirth and wish you the best of luck. You should know that it is a truly horrible experience. There is nothing beautiful or transcendent about it and there is no prize at the end for having toughed it out other than knowing you can do it. I have two children - my first with an epidural and my second without (I went from 3 cms to 9 cms in about 15 minutes and lost the window). I truly thought I might die from the pain and for a few minutes I wished I would. I'm not trying to scare you, just tell you the truth. If you are a small person having a large baby you are in for a very tough labor and quite possibly a C-section. Please just remember that it does not matter how you do it, only that you and the baby are okay at the end. Keep your options open and research all your choices.

You have no idea how much i relate. I don't want to scare you, but my husband is a very big man and was almost 10 lbs at birth so i was worried about the same thing. Everyone thought i would go early 'cause i was so big i looked like i was having twins. My Dr. thought by feeling me that my baby was around 8 lbs. Well!!!!! let me tell you. I tried everything under the sun to start labor and nothing worked. so dont believe the old wives tales, you will just make yourself miserable. i went overdue a few days but they didnt want to wait too long being i was so huge, so they induced...... it didn't work. they sent me home and did it again 4 days later. it still didnt work. they kept me over night and i finaly started to dialate, labored all day and finaly at 10 pm they did a c-section and i had an 11lb 4oz beautiful baby girl! so if there is a way for dr's to check the weight of baby, man do i have a few words for my doc!!!! good luck, that baby will come when its ready btw but only if it fits

I wouldnt worry about it, the doctor should keep and I on you and the baby very carefully throughout the next couple weeks and if any problems arise or your baby gets to big they should do what is necessary. Good luck with the rest of your pregnancy.

Theres nothing that you can do to, your not 40 weeks yet. If the doctor thinks the baby is to big he will induce you or give you a c section if necessary. He can't really weigh the baby..you stomach measurements should match your weeks. Good luck!

Its not just the Dilation you have to efface as well.. Try sex and walking... What ever you do DONT try the oil somepeople may tell you about.. All that does is cause you to get diarrea, and really bad gas pains.

I'm going to tell you all the stuff you probaly already heard and then some. Walk, and dring plenty of water. Ask your doctor to strip your membranes ( he/she will know what that means) it thins the bag so that the your water will break eaiser. Have lots of sex orgasm stimulate birth and I know this sounds wierd but rub you nipples ( for like 20-30 mins) it's also something that stimulates birth.

Its normal although you might have to be induced. There is nothing you can do. You could go into labor tomorrow even if ur not dilated yet..its normal.
