While the best presents I've ever received were intangible and beyond value, coming as they did from the hearts of others, the best material present I ever received was at Christmas, when I was eleven. I was given an 8mm movie projector and some clips from my favorite monster and comedy movies. From that present came my love and appreciation for movies as an artform, for collecting and studying movies, and for sharing that love and appreciation with other folks!

My favorite uncle gave me a Wizard of Oz snowglobe for graduation. Doesn't sound like much, but this uncle and I have been through a lot together and he was always the one person I could count on. The Wizard of Oz was one of my favorite movies as a child (born and raised in Kansas) and when he gave it to me he said, "I just want you to remember that no matter where you go in life, you can always just click your heels and come home." Now, just looking at it sitting on my bookshelf makes the real world not seem so scary.

My son was born on Valentine's Day. That was the very best Valentine present I've ever received. He really is a sweetheart, too.

For a random surprise between my b-day and Christmas, my husband got me a set of Le Creuset. It wasn't just the cookware or quality, he knew I had inherited my mom's old Le Creuset pot and it was all cracked but I insisted on using it. So he added to the collection since he knew what it meant to me.
