Better picture quality (more bandwidth), greater channel selection, two satellite companies to choose from, FOR LESS MONEY than the cable company that happens to have the monopoly for your community.
You are more likely to lose electricity from a storm than satellite signal.
The only two cons I can think of - to be given free equipment requires a one / two year commitment – depending on receiver selected (get a digital recorder). You must have a clear view of satellite in the sky.
You can probably tell I’m biased!

Pro - If you should loose a satellite signal, it will come back automatically. You do not have to wait days/weeks for the cable man to arrive, only to tell you that the trouble is somewhere else and they have to call out a different technician.
Cons: Yes you can loose signal in a sever rain/snow storm, but that is the exception, not the rule. You should not loose your signal due to wind, unless you live in a area where you have high trees or bushes which could block the signal to the south in a windy condition.
I have averaged service outages of under 30 minutes a year on satellite and have been on Dish Satellite for over 10 years. I doubt if there is a cable company out there that can match that record.

Pro is more channel selection and programs you cant get on cable....the con is that in heavy rain or wind, sometimes you lose signal...at least based on my experience.
