They will give you a local with a needle, but trust me, chances are that you wont feel it. After all the stretching that area will be doing, you barely feel it. I tore w/o the local cause it happened too fast and i didn't feel anything. You will be fine. don't worry.

You will already be numb if you have an epidural, although the often back it off a bit so you can feel somewhat to push.

If you don't have an epidural they should, if there is time, numb you before they make the cut. Or if you are going natural and time is short, they may not numb at all and then you may tear a slight bit. They should numb you however before they stitch you up. It all depends on timing and the lenght of the tear/cut.

Have the delivery nurse use warm compresses to help relax the muscles. My very big boy was delivered and I only needed 1 stitch!

i had an epidural so i was numb after i gave birth only needed numbing on one side, BUt i delivered with out being cut and tore a lil bit. I was told it's better to let it tear(unless its goin to be bad) cause its better for your boddy to heal . The sticths disolved so no need to go in was needed.

I was afraid of tearing too, but when it comes to it your thinking more of holding your baby than tearing. They sew you up as they are cleaning the baby and you dont feel a thing but a lil pressure and thats it.

I'd gor for natrual tear over being cut, cause if the baby is coming you want it out, not to sit there waiting to be cut while your contracting. They cut before the baby head comes out.

I was at a military hospital and well lets just say there were 3 women giving birth 5 minutes apart and i was the last to go. over 6 babies born that day and over 100 born that month.

Well if your planning on getting an epidural you'll be fine, But if your really afraid of having an episiotomy talk to your doctor express your fears,Find out how he stands on them, some doctors take their time and wait it out before making the decision to cut, others might just cut to hurry up and be done. If your really opposed to the idea (unless your child is at risk) set up a birthing plan. So your doctor and nurses are aware of your wishes. I wish you the best of luck..
If you do decide to have an epidural be aware the side effects are some times much worse then the actual labor.. Believe me I speak from experience.
( I also had an episiotomy under the epidural and the pain was minimal and I healed in fairly quick time. but you really forget the pain when you see your little bundle of joy)

With my first child I did tear, pretty bad. But, to tell you the honest truth, with the other pain I only felt a little burning. With my second child I was snipped. They didn't have time to numb me so it just happened. Again, I felt it and it burned a little bit, but nothing compared to what I was already feeling. Then again, I had no pain meds at all. The first time I was afraid of an epidural and the second time I wanted one, but by the time I got to the hospital I had dilated too much to get one. IT WAS TIME TO PUSH.

yes they give you a shot with a local anisthetic, and then cut the skin, all you feel when they cut it is like a little pinch, I had an episiotmy for my first pregnancy

If you tear, there is nothing that can be done. They can try to numb if they catch it in time. If they plan on an episiotomy, they will numb you unless you already have an epidural or something. Then you won't feel it. Doctors try to aviod episiotomies as much as possible. You won't be paying attention anyways...You'll be focused on your baby.

i had a ceserean myself but i watched all my godchildren be born and i can tell you that YES they most definately did receive a numbing shot before the episiotomy! i promise you sweetie that it isnt a big deal and if your doctor is a good one they will do everything to make sure you dont have to have one but if you do it is for your best interest and as long as your baby is perfectly healthy than you will be in your glory no matter what!
anticipate the good stuff!

You don't feel it if they give you an epidural.
Trust me, you WANT the epidural. I said i didn't want it, but I couldn't NOT get it.
But, I didn't get at episiotomy and things went just fine.

good luck!
