How can a state or an area of land in the united states secede from this country? That is, how can someone break away from america and form their own country?

It's pretty easy, actually, key west did it, when they became the conch republic.

Pass an Ordinance of Secession like the Confederate States did. Regardless of what some may believe, states have the power to secede from the union reserved to them by the 10th Amendment.

They can't...well they can, but it would create another civil war. There is only one state that is allowed to, Texas, because Texas is a republic, not a state and at anytime by vote of the Texas congress, they could secede from the US.
