Does anybody actually think that Notre Dame could beat teams like Minnesota or St. Cloud?

chernz said that Notre Dame will not be able to compete against teams like St. Cloud, North Dakota, Minnesota, Michigan, BC, and BU. This is as silly as it is misinformed. Of those teams, Notre Dame played two and went 3-0. They beat BC 7-1 (at BC when they were #1) and Michigan 7-3 on the road, and 4-3 at home. BU on the other hand went 2-2 against BC, finishing behind them in the Hockey East standings. The only WCHA team the Irish played was Mankato St. who they routed in the season opener, then lost to in overtime at Mankato. Out of SCSU, ‘sota, and UND, only North Dakota was perfect against the Mavericks. SCSU went 1-2-1 against MSU (including two losses at home). Da U fared better at 3-0-1, but only one of those wins was by more than a goal (in contrast to Notre Dame’s 6-1 shellacking). After losing to Notre Dame in the CCHA quarters this past weekend by a combined 10-2, Alaska head coach, Tavis MacMillan, said Notre Dame was “the best team I've ever seen”.

Obviously, these sort of comparisons are only valid to a point, but they serve to illustrate that chernz is completely wrong, Notre Dame has played with, and beaten, some of the better teams in the country (ranked 6/7 and 9/10/11, depending on which poll you believe). I take that back, he’s not completely wrong. I agree with his point that anything is possible, especially in March, so I guess we’ll just have to wait and see. My advice, don’t count out Notre Dame just because they’re much more renowned for football, basketball, and women’s soccer (and actually have academic standards), especially if they draw their first two games in Grand Rapids.

Absolutey. They play in one of the toughest college hockey conferences in the nation, the CCHA. When I was looking at schools, I noticed that Notre Dame does not offer 18 athletic scholarships like everyone one else in the Division 1 NCAA college hockey pool. I believe they only offer 9. If I am still right, which I think I am.

For that reason alone, I think they deserve to be no where else other than number 1. They are the top ranked team in the nation, and half of their starting roster are non-scholarship players.

As far as beating Minnesota or St. Cloud, we'll have to wait and see who they play in the NCAA championship tournament.

Yes and No. They deserve the number 1 seed but they wont go far in the Tournament. They have played good in a weak CCHA conference this year and their record shows they should be number 1. Once it comes down to the nitty gritty and they have to play games that mean something against teams like St. Cloud, North Dakota, Minny, MIchigan, BC, BU....they wont be able to compete with them. But, I mean, anything is possible but dont bet the farm on them.
